The national championship in memory of the fallen brothers-in-arms

The country’s strongest athletes took part in the Ukrainian Greco-Roman Wrestling Championship and the Ukrainian Freestyle Wrestling Cup. The competitions were dedicated to the warriors of the First Corps Azov who were killed defending Ukraine.

At the opening ceremony, Lieutenant Colonel Sviatoslav “Kalyna” Palamar, Hero of Ukraine and Deputy Commander of the First Corps Azov of the National Guard of Ukraine for Personnel Affairs, gave the opening remarks. He called on everyone to remember the fallen defenders and those who remain in captivity.

During the championship, the Wrestling Association of Ukraine and the First Corps Azov of the National Guard of Ukraine also signed a Memorandum of Cooperation. The parties united their efforts to:

  • Conduct joint training sessions, masterclasses, and training camps for Azov servicemen;
  • Develop and implement athletic and physical training programs for servicemen;
  • Support the social, psychological, and physical rehabilitation of servicemen and veterans of the Corps, including through engagement in wrestling.

The winners and holders of the Ukrainian Freestyle Wrestling Cup were the athletes from Ivano-Frankivsk region. They received a unique Cup that entered the National Register of Records of Ukraine as the most valuable sports trophy in the country: it weighs 16 kg, is crafted from a high-strength aluminum alloy, coated with sterling silver, and its handles are accented with 22-karat gold.

Second and third place went to Poltava region and the city of Kyiv.
